Applying for a Michigan Marriage License

Cost of marriage license and waiting period

As with nearly all other states in the U.S. there is mandatory waiting period of 3 days, while the license is being processed.

When planning your time, bear in mind that this does not include Saturdays, Sundays and other holidays.

Apparently there have been a few cases where the registry clerk has bent the rules in certain situations that call for a rushed license; every county and clerk is different.

The standard price of a Michigan marriage license varies depending on the area that you have chosen to wed, though it is usually; $20 for locals and $30 for non-residents, you will be expected to pay in cash.

Michigan Marriage License Requirements and Regulations

In Michigan there is no need for both partners to be present in person during the application process. If your partner cannot make it for whatever reason, you are required to bring a photo ID to present to the registry clerk.

A Michigan marriage license will usually expire after 30 days, during which time the ceremony must take place and the original certificate should be signed and printed by the minister or the official person solemnizing the couple. The certificate must then be sent back to the clerk’s office within 10 days for finalizing and recording.

Michigan is a little stricter on the proof of identification requirements, though just one person can be present during the licensing, you must bring picture ID’s. A drivers license, Military card or other major form of ID; besides this you should also have certified copies of your birth certificates.

For record purposes and history checks the clerk will probably ask for your parents address and names, as well as other relevant family history questions, try and prepare a few obvious facts for them.

The marriage of minors aged 16 – 17 years old require parental constant from wither a father, mother or legal guardian, who must also be physically present with a verifiable form of photo identification.
