California Marriage License laws seem complicated at first. But I've broken it down for you.

These are the documents you need to bring, and things to know when applying for your California marriage license. I’d recommend preparing for this at least a month ahead of time.

Each county can have their own requirements, so call the city clerk’s office to arrange an appointment.

California requires proof of ID, such as a drivers license and be prepared to bring a certified copy of your birth certificate as some counties need this.

However, you do not need to be a resident of California to apply for a California marriage license. Information to know:

Where each of your parents were born
The legal names of your parents, including your mother’s maiden name

If there was a previous marriage-you’ll need to provide proof or divorce, annulment or death. Bring a copy of your final divorce decree if you have divorced within the 90 days through past year (varies by county).

There is no waiting period in California.

It will cost you $45.00+ to get married in California. Some California counties charge $84+. The cost of receiving a marriage license varies from county to county and some California counties will only accept cash ... so call to verify.

California doesn't require blood tests.

Proxy Marriages - Yes, proxy marriages are allowed in California but on a very limited basis. Only members of the armed forces who are stationed far away in wars or conflicts can apply for a proxy marriage. The California proxy marriage law allows military personnel to give their power of attorney for someone to stand in for them during their wedding ceremony. Common Law Marriages - No.
