Wedding Cakes Tips

Questions to ask cake designers and bakeries when looking for a beach-wedding cakes:

How far in advance are cakes made? (as close to the wedding date as possible).
Is the baker licensed by the state health department? - this is important.
What ingredients are used-fresh fruits or purees, Italian or farm fresh butter cream? Ask for a list and tasting of cake flavors and fillings.
How many people work on my cake? If there is a separate designer, am I able to speak directly with that person?
Do they deliver? Is there an extra cost? (well worth it if the cake is large or delicate).
Can they put on extra items you bought ahead of time? (shells, cake topper...)

Some things to keep in mind for a beach-wedding cake:

Think about the location your cake will be in all day. If you are indeed having a wedding on the beach, you'll need to protect it from the elements. Also, butter cream would not hold up very well in the hot sun. Fondant would be a better choice for outside wedding receptions.
